Benefits of a Sticker Reward Calendar

Thu, 02/02/2012 - 16:58
In our experience with Asperger's syndrome, we as parents, have tried many different ways to reward our son's positive behaviour at school. We would take him swimming or to the park or maybe buy him a special gift. The only drawback in this type of reward system is, that if your child goes on a run of rough days in class, it's not fair to deny all the fun things you could do together.

Tue, 01/31/2012 - 20:14
Just because someone appears to be qualified to be an autism teacher for your autistic child does not necessarily mean that they will be good for your child. An autistic child will come to see their autism teacher as a role model and you want to make sure that such a person really has the personality and character that is worthy of being viewed as a role modem, which is not always the case as this article outlines.

Sensitivity to Lights and Sounds in Vehicles

Fri, 01/27/2012 - 22:09
Children with sensory integration disorder or sensitivities to light and sound, can resist going out for a walk, playing on the playground, and even going for a ride in the car. Sensory integration disorder is when the brain doesn't understand the information it is receiving from the senses and misinterprets it. When a child is sensitive to the brightness of light or sound that it is either too loud or high-pitched, they may overreact and exhibit a variety of behavioral challenges, such as crying, screaming, having headaches or stomachaches.

Benefits of Small Class Size for Students With Disabilities

Fri, 01/27/2012 - 18:49
A classroom for children with autism should never be more than 4 students to one teacher and an aide. I am amazed that educational leaders do not get the attention those with this disability need to overcome challenges they experience in learning. The mass production concept in America simply does not work for those with learning challenges. Children get lost in the shuffle, act-out, daydream or simply stay stuck where they are. I work at a private special needs school where we do not believe in the sardine approach to education. I would encourage parents to demand small classroom size for their child with learning problems. Maybe the teacher will actually develop a relationship with the child, understand their learning needs and style and the child will actually have a chance to get what they need.

Transitions are often a major challenge for those with Asperger's. I witness this first hand with my nine year old son and see the amount of stress and anxiety he endures when he faces change. For example, this past Christmas break he enjoyed two quiet weeks at home mainly playing with his new toys, one play date, and a couple of family gatherings.

Divorce and Autism: Making the Best of an Unfortunate Situation

Tue, 01/17/2012 - 16:09
The myth that families of children with Autism have an 80% divorce rate was proven false by researcher Brian Freedman, PhD, clinical director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, as this article, Autism Families: High Divorce Rate Is a Myth, states. Despite the fact that parents of a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder experience more stress, the rates of divorce remain similar to those of parents with neuro-typical children. Unfortunately, that does not mean that parents of special needs children do NOT get divorced.

And we officially feel better after over indulging on New Year's Eve. We had a great time celebrating and Jacob was well behaved for my sister in law as usual, who watched Jacob for us. We ended our celebration in our neighborhood at a local bar, which had a great rock band playing through the night.

Fri, 01/06/2012 - 22:12
Many other medical conditions may occur along with autism. These comorbid conditions are also important in determining the diagnosis of autism. The comorbid conditions may be used to indicate autism; however, they do not have a direct effect in causing disabilities associated with autism. Autism is firmly diagnosed as a cognitive disability that starts in early childhood, continues through adulthood and has an effect on the development of imaginative, communication and social interaction skills.
